Ion Exchange Softening (Resin Layer): Water passes through 1 cubic foot of cation exchange resin. This resin attracts and removes calcium, magnesium (the causes of "hard water"), and some iron via ion exchange—swapping them for sodium ions. Activated Carbon Filtration (Carbon Layer): The system also includes 1 cubic foot of coconut shell activated carbon.
